Biography
Tony Moore is Research Associate on the ESRC-funded project "Credit Finance in the Middle Ages: Loans to the English Crown c.1272-1340" based at the ICMA centre. The project will compile an edition of the sources for the relationship between Edwards I, II and III and their creditors. These credit agreements will be analyzed to calculate terms and implied interest rates, with the aim of demonstrating that medieval monarchs were aware of 'modern' financial practices.
Dr. Moore previously studied at the University of Cambridge, as an undergraduate and postgraduate, and his PhD thesis, entitled 'Government and Locality in Essex during the reign of Henry III, 1216-1272', was approved in May 2006. From 2006-2007 he worked as Research Associate on 'The "Lands of the Normans" in England, 1204-1244', an AHRC-funded project at the University of Sheffield. This aimed to investigate the impact of the end of the Anglo-Norman realm through the study of a sample of families and manors. The project also sought to examine the potential of recent developments in Information Technology by developing a set of tools for prosopographical research (an online searchable database, with provision for creating maps and reconstructing genealogies).
His own research focuses on the relationship between centre and locality in medieval England. In particular, his work looks at the identity of the landed class and the development of royal government and law in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, as well as the politics of Henry III's reign. He is also interested in local history (especially of Essex, Hertfordshire and London) and the use of ICT in historical research.
