What did Debenhams do wrong?
Last week saw yet another established high street chain store file for administration.
Shares in Debenhams had fallen from 90p, 4 years ago, to 2p at the end of last week when they were suspended from trading. Shareholders such as Mike Ashley, face a total loss.
Where did Debenhams go wrong? What does the future hold for the company and how will this impact the wider high street?

Wenyi (Emma) Sun, has been selected by Reading University Students Union (RUSU) for the Graduate Teaching Assistant Excellence Award! This marks the second year in a row where a PhD Student from the ICMA Centre has won the award, with Dina Ghanma winning previously.
Learning from the Competition

ICMA Centre Visiting Fellow Dr Keith Arundale was featured in the November 2018 issue of the ICAEW’s Corporate Financier magazine. The article “Learning from the Competition” was based on Keith’s PhD research into the difference in investment practices of European and US venture capital firms and in their structural characteristics and the wider environment in which the firms operate, including cultural differences and attitudes to risk. Keith’s thesis is that these differences contribute to the lower historic performance of European VC funds compared to US VC funds.
