Operational Risk Fundamentals

Objectives

Operational Risk is a key discipline for everyone in the financial services industry.  Successfully managing and controlling operational risk is a necessity for effective management of any financial services firm.  This course will give participants a very practical understanding of the issues in operational risk faced by financial institutions.

We look at types and causes of operational risk events and the control environments and how the design and effectiveness of this environment can affect operational risk exposure.  We also consider the rules and regulations around operational risk including capital adequacy rules and also how it as a form of quality control to provide upside to the business and improve returns to shareholders.

Target Audience

Everyone who works in financial services manages operational risk.  Key areas that will find this course particularly interesting are business management, operations, financial control, compliance and risk control.

Whilst many of the examples and rules are drawn from the banking sector, the course will be of interest to those from a variety of financial services organisations.

Length and Structure of the Course

This course consists of one day of lectures, case studies and group exercises. The day has four 90-minute sessions with coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon plus lunch. There is no examination for this course but candidates will receive a certificate of attendance.
