Biography
John initially graduated with an Honours BA in accounting and economics and later returned to complete his MBA in finance at the University of Toronto. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers (FICB). Later in his career he completed a Master in International Public Policy at the Johns Hopkins University with a focus on government financial policy and monetary integration in the European Union.
John is a Canadian and British citizen who started his career at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) in Toronto in 1980 in corporate finance. In particular, he was heavily involved with many large-scale corporate and sovereign restructurings after the oil price collapse of 1983. In 1987, he moved to Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) in the bank’s debt capital markets (DCM) group. As part of a three member team he was responsible for money market and public and private debt issuance of all Canadian issuers (corporate and government) in the Euro, Yankee and Swiss franc sectors. He also worked at UBS New York focusing on debt private placements in the US market following the creation of ‘Rule 144a’, which opened up the US private placement market to foreign issuers.
John moved to London in 1991 joining the fixed income division of Scotia Capital where he was responsible for institutional investor relationships in Germany, the Caribbean and the Middle East (six GCC countries). His initial focus was on interest rate products although he later took on the role of bank relationship manager for the Middle East, which gave him responsibility for marketing and managing the entire array of bank products and services (including fund management, capital raising, commodities, etc.).
John left the markets in 2000 and set up his own consulting and research company. The initial year was focussed on the set-up of a multi-bank eCommerce platform. Since that time the business has been dedicated to, firstly, the providing of fundamental research to institutional investors (with an emphasis on combining public policy issues to macroeconomics and financial markets) and, secondly, assisting bank strategy and marketing of eCommerce and outsourcing solutions.
John is the Programme Director for the MSc Investment Management and is Head of ICMA Professional Education.
