Biography

Michael Smith is a lecturer in finance and dealing room director at the ICMA Centre where he has been teaching the derivative securities module since 1994. He was formerly a city trader for 8 years where he made markets in cash equities before moving on to a variety of derivatives desks. He holds a BA in Economics from Leeds University, a Diploma in Mathematics from the Open University and a PhD and MSc in Finance from Reading University. He provides regular training programs for investment banks globally with clients including Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase and UniCredit. He is a visiting lecturer at the Doctoral School of Economics in Bucharest, The University of Stellenbosch Business School in Cape-Town and the Technical University of Munich.

He specialises in teaching practical finance, in particular options trading, where his main area of interest is the use of trading simulations in the teaching process. He recently developed an advanced trading simulation, ICTrader.
